Welcoming LGBTQ Drive as a Free2B Pride Partner
We’re thrilled to announce our new partnership with LGBTQ Drive, an inclusive driving school dedicated to creating a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ learners.
For some LGBTQ+ people, learning to drive can cause anxiety about being judged or misunderstood. That’s exactly what Nigel set out to change when he created LGBTQ Drive.
Through our partnership, LGBTQ Drive will be supporting Free2B’s work with LGBTQ+ young people and and their families, helping us continue to create safe, inclusive spaces where everyone can be free to be themselves.
We caught up with Nigel to hear more about what inspired him, the challenges he’s seen, and why inclusion on the road matters just as much as it does in life.

Meet Nigel — Founder of LGBTQ Drive
What inspired you to create LGBTQ Drive?
I started LGBTQ Drive because I wanted to create a genuinely inclusive and welcoming space for learners who didn’t always feel comfortable elsewhere. Over the years, I heard too many stories from LGBTQ+ people who had faced judgment or awkwardness when learning to drive. I wanted to change that. For me, driving is about freedom and confidence, and everyone deserves the chance to learn in an environment where they can truly be themselves.

What challenges did you notice LGBTQ+ learners facing?
A lot of LGBTQ+ learners tell me they worry about how they’ll be treated, whether an instructor will respect their pronouns, understand their identity, or just make them feel at ease. Some have had negative experiences in the past that really knocked their confidence. I’ve seen that anxiety first-hand, and it’s something I work hard to help people overcome. My focus is always on creating a calm, safe space where learners can focus on driving, not on being judged.
How does LGBTQ Drive differ from other driving schools?
LGBTQ Drive is built entirely around inclusion and understanding. I don’t just teach people to drive; I help them build confidence in a space where they know they’ll be respected and supported. Everything I do is learner-focused and paced to suit the individual. I bring my experience as an A-grade instructor, but also my belief that driving lessons should be free from stress, pressure, or fear of discrimination. For me, it’s not just about passing a test, it’s about helping someone feel capable, confident, and proud.
How do you make sure learners feel safe, respected and supported?
It all starts with listening. I take time to get to know each learner and understand what makes them feel comfortable. I always make sure names and pronouns are respected, communication is open, and lessons move at a pace that feels right for them. My car is a completely judgment-free zone. I want every learner to feel that they can relax, make mistakes, and grow. My top priority is making sure people feel safe and valued every time they step into the car.
What do you enjoy most about working with LGBTQ+ learners?
What I love most is seeing the change in people, watching someone go from nervous and uncertain to confident and independent. Those moments when a learner suddenly realises, “I can do this,” are incredible. I also love the honesty, humour, and strength that so many LGBTQ+ learners bring with them. It’s a privilege to be part of their journey and to help them find a sense of pride and freedom behind the wheel.

What advice would you give to LGBTQ+ young people who are learning to drive or struggling with confidence?
Be patient with yourself. Confidence doesn’t happen overnight. Learning to drive takes time, and it’s completely normal to make mistakes along the way. The key is finding an instructor and an environment where you feel comfortable being yourself. Don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s. You belong on the road just as much as anyone else, and with time and support, you’ll get there.
How do you see LGBTQ Drive’s work connecting with what we do at Free2B?
I think LGBTQ Drive and Free2B share the same goal; helping LGBTQ+ people feel confident, accepted, and proud of who they are. Free2B does amazing work supporting young people’s wellbeing and identity, and what I do complements that by giving them a practical skill that builds independence and confidence. We’re both helping people feel empowered to live authentically in life and on the road.
💜 Thank you, Nigel!
We’re so proud to have LGBTQ Drive on board as a Pride Partner. Their support helps us continue providing 1:1 mentoring, youth clubs, and family support for LGBTQ+ young people in London.
