Sharing Youth-Led Practice Through Turning the Tide
Free2B recently delivered training to members of the national Turning the Tide network, coordinated by The Kite Trust.
The session focused on how our youth council, Rainbow Power, works, covering everything from recruitment and ground rules to keeping projects genuinely youth-led .
We shared examples of Rainbow Power’s social action work which include:
• The “Single Stall Toilets for All” accessibility campaign
• Creating inclusion resources and Top Tips for professionals
• Consulting with NHS services
• Rainbow Power Community Assessments (known by our members as QuOfsted)
• Feeding directly into Free2B’s strategic planning
We also spoke honestly about key challenges such as fluctuating attendance and long-running projects as well as the practical solutions we’ve developed over time .
Following the training, we were thrilled to receive this feedback:
“My name is Jam, I am one of the Youth Workers for The Kite Trust attending the training today. I just wanted to personally reach out to say how much I genuinely enjoyed the session. I especially appreciated the way young people’s interests and perspectives were acknowledged, empowered, and placed at the centre of the work and how they were then developed into a wide range of creative, educational, and informative projects that truly amplified their voices while also engaging audiences in meaningful ways.
Thank you again for such an insightful and motivating training. I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve learned into practice.“
Turning the Tide is built on sharing skills across the network. By opening up our learning, we hope to support other organisations to create spaces where young people aren’t simply consulted, but actively shaping decisions and influencing wider practice.
